We love Art in Pre-Prep!

Art weaves its way throughout all subjects of the curriculum and the boys always enjoy being creative and using different tools to make their masterpieces! As the new school year begins, the boys are enjoying exploring their imaginations and we are seeing some wonderful work in the Pre-Prep Art Gallery.

In Reception, the boys have been working on self-portraits. They looked at some of the work of Vincent van Gogh and read Laurence Arnholt’s story ‘Camille and the sunflowers’ which includes reproductions of van Gogh’s work. Vincent van Gogh painted over 30 self-portraits between the years 1886 and 1889 making him one of the most prolific self-portraitists of all time. With this in mind, the Reception boys got to work! They looked at themselves in the mirror, taking account of their features and the colour of their hair, eyes and skin. In their lessons, they talked about how no one looked exactly the same and that this is something to celebrate!

Year 2 also worked on their self-portraits; sketching and colouring carefully their faces. The boys looked at the proportion of their features. They partitioned their faces into three parts and looked in a mirror at the location of their ears and the shape of their eyes, nostrils, eyebrows and lips. With their artwork on display, the teachers were able to guess who was who!

Continuing the theme of individuality, Year 1 read the story of Elmer for an English Comprehension lesson as well as discussing what makes them special in PSHME, before creating their own Elmer in their Art lesson. They used watercolours to carefully fill Elmer’s patches. Everyone’s Elmer was different and wonderful!
