School life

Doors open
From 8.00am the Head of Pre-Prep opens the gate and greets the boys. Year 1 boys enter between 8.00am and 8.15am, and Reception and Year 2 between 8.15am and 8.30am. The pupils wash their hands and proceed quietly to their classrooms. The gate closes at 8.30am. Form Time takes place between 8.00 and 8.45am.

Lessons
Lessons begin at 8.45am and finish at 3.15pm for Reception, 3.30pm for Year 1 and 3.45pm for Year 2.

Assemblies
Whole School Assembly occurs at 8.50am every Monday. All pupils and staff attend. Classes are escorted to the Hall or to the Macbeath Room at Haven Green Baptist Church, by the Form teacher, where they sit in their Forms, supervised by him/her. Assembly finishes at 9.20am.
On Thursday mornings at 8.50am, the school operates a bi-weekly system of either a House Assembly (whole House or Vertical Group Meetings) or a Utility Session. The Utility Session allows time for the Music Department to rehearse Choirs and other musical groups. Other pupils remain in the Form Room at this time.

Lunch and breaktimes
Pre-ordered Hot Lunches, or a packed lunch from home, are eaten in pupils’ Form Rooms.
Break Time (Castlebar Field)
Pre-Prep school boys line up in the car park, ready to be escorted to the field. At the end of the playtime a whistle is blown and the boys walk back to school.

Games
Games lessons take place on Thursday for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Pupils come to school dressed in their PE/Games kit.

Enrichment Programme
The aim of the Enrichment Programme in Year 1 and 2 is to enhance the boys’ critical thinking and to develop new life skills. Activities include cooking, philosophy, yoga, engineering and debating to name but a few. We hope that these new skills and experiences will benefit the boys and provide them with a well-rounded education. Enrichment activities take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

The End of the Day
At the end of the day pupils collect their belongings from their Form Rooms. Pupils leave school through the car park at the back of Middleton’s, unless they are due to attend After School Care.
Wraparound Care
After School care is available from the end of the school day until 6pm. There is a charge of £2.75 per 15 minutes.

House Events and Utility Sessions
On Thursday mornings at 8.45am (Lesson 1), the school operates a bi-weekly system of either a House Meeting (Whole House Meetings or House Vertical Group Meetings) or a Utility Session. The Utility Session allows time for the Music Department to rehearse Choirs and other musical groups, with boys being removed from their Form Classes. Pupils not involved in any musical group remain with their Form Teachers for a period of sustained silent reading. During a Utility Session, the Library is open to boys who wish to take out books or take an Accelerated Reader Quiz.

Lunch and break times
Lunchtime
All pupils eat lunch in the Form Rooms at 12.20pm Years 3-4 are supervised by the Lunchtime Supervisors and/or duty staff members for that day. Junior school boys line up in pairs at the rear of school, in the Junior School Garden, ready to be escorted to Castlebar Field, at 12.45pm.

Games
Games lessons are held on Monday. Pupils arrive at school on Games days wearing the appropriate Games kit. Boys return from Games in time to leave school at 4.30pm.

Enrichment
The Enrichment Programme occurs from 3.10pm to 4.00pm on Tuesday – Friday. The programme aims to develop skills and knowledge that is not necessarily covered by the academic curriculum. Pupils are guided in their choice of options. The schedule is prepared by the Head of Junior School.

The end of the day
At the end of the day, whether a Games day or not, boys in Junior School collect their belongings from their Form Room and the Cloakroom. Boys leave school through the rear gate at Junior School unless they are due to attend After School Care.

After School care is available from the end of the school day until 6pm. There is a charge of £2.75 per 15 minutes.

Year 5 enter through the Eaton Rise gate at 8am and Year 6 arrive through the same gate at 8.15am.
Boys in Year 7 arrive at School between 8.00 – 8.15am and enter through the main gate on Castlebar Road. Boys in Year 8 enter at the same location, between 8.15 – 8.30am.
On arrival, boys wash hands under supervision, before entering West Corridor, where all bags, coats, lunches and school books are kept. Having gathered their books, files and stationery for lessons, all boys make their way to the form rooms, where they meet their Form Teacher for Form Time, and where registration is taken.

All boys are taken to Castlebar Fields for daily breaks. Boys in Year 7 go to Castlebar Break with Year 5 and boys in Year 8 go with Year 6.

Games and fixtures
Games
Pupils return from Games in time to leave school at 4.30pm.
Fixtures
Sometimes pupils play fixtures against other schools and may arrive back to school at later times. These different times are given to the pupils concerned and parents are informed. On return, those having participated in the fixture are then supervised by a member of staff accompanying them.

End of the day
Lessons end at 3.45pm on non-games days and at 4.30pm on Games and Enrichment days. All boys leave via the front of school and exit through the iron gates in Castlebar Road. Boys wash hands and wait at the front of school, under supervision, until they are collected. Boys in After-School Care should make their way to Room 12 after collecting their things.
